Borders in the 21st Century: An Analysis from the Nation-State and the International System

The Observatory for the Analysis of International Systems (OASIS) and the Observatory for Public Administration Policy, Implementation and Results (ÓPERA), dedicated to International Relations and Government and Public Policy respectively, indexed and peer-reviewed journals, are presently open for contributions to their joint call for articles for their issues 40 (OASIS) and 35 (ÓPERA) (July – December 2024) with the theme “Borders in the 21st Century: an analysis from the Nation-State and the International System”.
Borders have been crucial for the creation, strengthening, development and evolution of Nation-States since their formation. In some cases, borders have also set the course for the weakness, decline, and even destruction of the Nation-State. Being the outer limit of a state, borders become a space where different levels of state control converge with external threats, commercial dynamics, illegal activities, social problems, among others. Borders, by their very nature, change, evolve, transform, and mark the future of states, both from public policies for the internal dimension, and in terms of foreign policy in the international system.
This special joint issue of OASIS and ÓPERA aims to analyse the role played by borders within Nation- States in the 21st century and the implications for the relationship of Nation-States with their neighbours and the international system.
